Advertising Concepts Explained.
Most of us are all at different levels of marketing online. Now think about
it, what does Ezine mean to someone who is totally new? It's hard to know
what all this new jargon and terminology means, unless someone takes the time
to explain it all.
This page has been put together to help those whom are new or even at some
kind of intermediate level.
The page will also be used to refer members of my downlines who are still
learning to promote.
I still remember that I didn’t even know what a safelist was when first
becoming interested in making money online.
It would also have a great benefit to have known about safelists a lot earlier
than I did! (I blame lazy uplines)
After learning what all the different advertising concepts were all about,
it was easy to put them all to good use.
Listed below are brief definitions of jargon and/or terminology of different
advertisement concepts as well as miscellaneous jargon. Wherever possible
an example is included.

Newbie
Slang term for someone new to the online marketing scene. Don’t be
offended by it, we all start there.
Ezine
Electronic magazine or Newsletter. They come in many shapes and forms; most
common are emails and online publications. Involves subscribing to a particular
Ezine. You also have the right to unsubscribe.
Safelist
In simple terms, a safe list is a special email list whose members all have
agreed to receive email adverts from each other. Upon joining, everyone has
verified his or her membership; it is also known as or referred to as an opt-in
list. For more information see our page “what is
a safelist?”
Opt-in
Quite simply to opt-in to something, is to subscribe to something. i.e.
an Ezine or safelist.
Opt-out
The complete reverse of opt-in. Anything you subscribe to must have a way
to unsubscribe by law under the Can-Spam Act (The laws governing email and
Spam)
Autoresponder
An automated email response to each incoming message that is sent to a specific
address. Each email address on your account can have a different autoresponder.
An example: Jane sends an email to mehrnooshj@getresponse.com. The autoresponder
for this email address sends a prewritten message back to Jane automatically.
For a good example: Getresponse.com
List Building
The most exciting form of email marketing. Quite simply building you own
email address list. A common way is to start your own Ezine/Newsletter. You
might want to start your own safelist or opt-in mailing list. There are all
kinds of list building gimmicks and services available on the Internet. Once
you get well established on the Net you will find this the most powerful form
of marketing. You will need to research it well, learn all you can about it.
It’s not rocket science but there is a bit of work involved. See more
on our List Building page.
Bulk Mail
The sending of mass emails using a mass mailer software application. It’s
ok when you are the owner of the massive list and you have proper subscribers
or legally obtained the list of email addresses. But bulk mail is also commonly
associated with Spam and illegally harvested email addresses. So if you decide
to buy a mailing list, look very carefully at whom you are buying from. There
are a lot of cheap mailing lists available that will land you in big trouble.
The legitimate email lists generally come with a higher price tag from a reputable
company whom has all their contact details available.
Group Mail
Organizations like Topica, Yahoogroups and Smartgroups host lists of group
email address that has members in the group. You can also use mass mailer
software with these too.
For more information go to our group mail page.
Spam
(Also known as unsolicited commercial e-mail) Unwanted, unsolicited
junk e-mail to a large number of recipients.
Spam is the slang term for unsolicited commercial email. Most go so far as
to call any unwanted Internet advertising, whether via email, newsgroups,
multiple search engine posting, forum posting, etc
Traffic Exchanges
Also known as Hit Exchanges, Start Exchanges, Surf Exchanges & TE’s
(jargon/slang).
There is also a variable known as Auto-Exchanges.
A Traffic Exchange is a community of webmasters, who trade traffic with each
other, by viewing each other's sites. This is done both manually and automatically
(auto-exchange). Here is an example of a traffic exchange: Prosource-Traffic
Banner Exchange
Quite simply the exchanging of banner displaying. Every time you display
a banner on your website your banner will be shown on another.
For examples go to banner exchange page.
FFA
Free For All. The posting of one line adverts across FFA networks. A few
years back this form of promotion was very popular; everyone was posting their
one-line ads on these types of sites for more traffic to their site and a
better "link popularity". This is known as link farming. It is no
longer recommend doing this, as your site will be penalized. Posting to FFA’s
will also generate a large amount of incoming emails. You should also never
use your primary email account.
For examples of FFA's go to FFA page
Submitters and Blasters
Usually refers to software or a service used in some form of mass submission
to FFA’s, Search Engines, Classifieds and Safelists
Here is an example of a free
submission service.
Here is an example of a Safelist
submitter software application.
SEO
Search Engine Optimization
The preparation done generally before submitting your website to be indexed
on various search engines. You will have to study this at great length to
understand it all. It’s quite often best to hire a specialist to do
it for you. Also available are software applications that will analyze your
pages for you.
Chain Advertising
A created webpage advert for you on a particular network. Your link goes
on top and will get shifted down one place, as your new referrals ad their
link inserting their ad on the top spot. In theory everyone promotes their
page as much as possible and anyone who signs-up from your page will be issued
their own page with your link shifted down one place. Any sign-ups they get
will also have your link, and so on, down to X amount of levels. This will
translate to tremendous traffic over a period of time.
Here is an example of this concept
Pop-Ups
Normally JavaScript that activates a pop up advert whilst visiting your
website.
Often considered an annoying form of advertising. Nevertheless if used correctly
it’s an affective form of getting noticed. There are also the relatively
new types of pop-ups called “fly over pop ups”

Viral Marketing
There are many ways to define Viral Marketing I prefer this:
The use of a self-perpetuation mechanism, such as a referral or affiliate
program, to grow a user base in a manner similar to the spread of a virus.
Good viral marketing campaigns have extraordinary results.
Downline builders are classic example of viral marketing.
Here are two different examples. Referjet
a simple downline builder. MPAM
(Massive Passive Advertising Machine) a more complex downline builder
and not just a downline builder but also a great place to begin learning how
to succeed online.
Newsgroups
Discussion groups on the Internet not on the Web, which is only one area
of the Internet. Your ISP usually provides access to newsgroups and you can
access these groups via an email client like outlook express. Newsgroups are
classified by subject matter. Participants in a newsgroup conduct discussions
by posting messages for others to read, and responding to the messages posted
by others. Not a great place to advertise, you will get in trouble for Spamming.
There are a handful of well known newsgroups where advertising of opportunities
is allowed.
To access newsgroups you will need to go to your ISP’s website to find
out how to configure your email client.
Message Board & Forum Posting
Forums are really for discussions and each forum has it’s own set of
rules concerning what is considered forum Spamming and what isn’t. Some
forums have an open section for advertising, but most forum admins and participants
get offended if advertising is your only contribution and you will find yourself
deleted. See forums page.
Multi-Level Marketing
Selling products by using independent distributorships and allowing these
distributors to build and manage their own sales force by recruiting, training,
supplying, and motivating others to do the same. The distributors' compensation
includes their own sales and a percentage of the sales achieved by their downline.
Network Marketing
A business in which a distributor network is needed to build the business.
MLM is often also referred to as Network Marketing and visa versa, because
the nature in that payouts also occur at more than one level. Network Marketing
is sometimes also used incorrectly to indicate that the business uses a network
of product suppliers in order to offer a broader selection of products or
services. It is usually used this way to differentiate them as a way to suggest
that their program is superior.
Affiliate Marketing
A business relationship or an affiliation with a merchant or other service
provider who allows you to link to that business. When a visitor clicks on
the link usually containing your personal code/id from your site or advert
and subsequently makes a purchase from the merchant, you receive a commission
based on the amount of the sale. Clickbank merchants are good example.
